Grains & Cover Crops
Green manure crops and grains are important to keep nutrients from leaching, build organic matter, and control weeds. They are easy to grow, even in poor soils. We alternate fields at our farm, allowing them to rest for a whole year by seeding a grain or green manure crop. They are often planted in late fall or early spring and harvested in August in this area, making it possible to plant a second late crop which benefits by following a cleansing crops such as a grain.
