The Incas, who held the crop to be sacred,referred to quinoa as chisaya mama or ‘mother of all grains. It is very high in protein. Quinoa does best in sandy, well-drained soils. It does not need a high nutrient content. Sow in spring- late April to late May. Plant 1/2” deep in rows 1 1/2 feet apart. Thin to 6” apart. Plants will grow 4 to 6 feet high. It is ready to harvest when the leaves have fallen off. It can take a light frost but harvest before fall rains begin.
